Vienna has reaffirmed its role as a European innovation hub
The 2026 edition of ViennaUp concluded by reaffirming the role of the Austrian capital as one of the key hubs for the European start-up ecosystem. The festival, comprising the WarmUP Weekend and the main events held from 18 to 22 May, brought together thousands of entrepreneurs, investors, venture capital funds and innovation professionals from all over the world.
The event offered a concrete overview of the trends that are transforming the European market, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence, fintech, green-tech and sustainability.
Growing investment and new opportunities for start-ups
One of the most discussed topics at ViennaUp 2026 was the rapid development of the Austrian entrepreneurial ecosystem. In recent years, Vienna has benefited from measures designed to encourage the creation and growth of young, innovative businesses, attracting an increasing number of technology start-ups.
Data presented during the festival highlighted a particularly positive first quarter in 2026, with local start-ups raising over €200 million in investments. This result has strengthened the interest of international investors in the Austrian market and Central Europe.
Green-tech and sustainability have attracted investors’ attention

AI Factory at the forefront of European innovation
One of the key topics at the event was the role of the AI Factory, the public-private centre created to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence in Europe.
During the meetings, progress in the creation of advanced services dedicated to the use of supercomputers and the development of innovative AI-based applications were outlined. The centre, supported by European and national funding, has already established partnerships with numerous start-ups and organisations active in the field of robotics, data analysis and digital media.
Particular attention was paid to projects aimed at creating European language models and open-source tools intended for the information sector.
Fintech and digital sovereignty among the key themes
The fintech sector played an important role at the event, with the participation of companies specialising in digital assets, innovative financial services and technology for data management.
One of the most relevant themes that emerged was that of European digital sovereignty, considered strategic for the continent’s competitiveness. During the World Summit Awards, several solutions that are capable of reducing dependence on major international platforms and encouraging the growth of technology developed in Europe were presented.
Among the award-winning projects, a start-up that uses artificial intelligence to analyse retinal images, enabling the early detection of certain eye diseases stood out in particular.

The event concluded by confirming Vienna as one of Europe’s leading hubs for start-ups, technology and investment.
For investors, entrepreneurs and finance professionals, ViennaUp 2026 provided a key opportunity to identify new business opportunities, monitor the evolution of technological innovation and understand which sectors will drive European economic growth in the coming years.
